History

In July 2005, industry and Government of Alberta representatives sat around a large boardroom table in Edmonton discussing the issues facing the large-scale deployment of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in Canada.  It quickly became apparent to everyone in the room that the issues facing CCS transcended the energy industry and were bigger than any one company could tackle. That was when the idea of an industry group that would research these challenges and work to come up with solutions was suggested. One month later, in August 2005, a meeting was held for anyone in industry who wanted to participate as well as the Alberta and federal governments.  The companies around the table decided that the best way to move ahead was to work together, and ICO2N was formed.

The group started with 11 companies and both levels of government were involved as honourary members.  ICO2N currently has 12 member companies that include oil sands producers, large-scale electricity producers and other companies that are connected to the energy industry.

ICO2N has completed studies and done analysis on CCS technology, economics and policies.  Since the very beginning, ICO2N has striven to promote the advancement of large-scale CCS deployment in Canada and has communicated its findings as widely and transparently as possible in an effort to increase CCS knowledge.
