Alberta’s Carbon Capture and Storage Story

Alberta is Canada’s Carbon Capture and Storage Leader

Alberta is at the forefront of CCS leadership. Alberta was the first jurisdiction in Canada to enact GHG regulations and has a goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 200 MT by 2050.

Similar to the national strategy, the Government of Alberta has three key strategies to help meet this goal:

  • Conservation and energy efficiency
  • CCS
  • Greening energy production

As can be seen on the graph below, CCS is a major part of the strategy, accounting for 70% of emission intensity reductions by 2050.
