Alberta’s Potential

Alberta has three essential elements that position the province well to benefit from Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) development and makes it an ideal location for further demonstration projects.

Alberta is home to a variety of large CO2 emitting industrial activities with potential to capture CO2. These include:

  • Coal-fired power
  • Ongoing development of oil sands projects
  • Petroleum refining and upgrading facilities
  • Petrochemical and fertilizer industries
  • Cement manufacturing
  • Industrial sources close to storage sites

Alberta has the ideal geologic conditions for storing CO2

  • Deep and secure geologic formations
  • Many depleted oil and gas reservoirs
  • Expanding opportunities for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR)
  • A large variety of proven and prospective saline reservoirs
  • The WCSB provides the essential structural barriers in geological formations

Alberta’s industrial experience fits well with CCS

  • Extensive geological expertise from 100 years of oil and gas exploration and production
  • 20+ years in Enhanced Oil Recovery using other substances
  • World-class pipeline knowledge and infrastructure
  • Significant expertise in designing and maintaining hydrocarbon/chemical processing and upgrading facilities
  • Extensive experience extracting CO2 from natural gas and other gas separation operations
