Global Carbon Capture and Storage Projects

Approximately $25 billion has been invested worldwide in 234 active or planned Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects of all types and scales (pilot, commercial, etc.) – in Canada, the U.S., the Netherlands, Germany, France, Australia, Poland, the U.K., Abu Dhabi, the Czech Republic, Spain, Italy, China, and elsewhere.

There are currently eight operational commercial scale projects in the world.

Sleipner

Norway – Statoil

  • Began operations in 1996, the world’s first commercial CCS project,
  • Captures CO2 ­from a gas processing facility using an amine process and stores it 1000 metres below the sea floor in a deep saline reservoir

  • Began operations in 2006
  • 0.7 Mt/yr of CO2 is captured from a LNG manufacturing process and is stored 2,600 meters beneath the seabed

Algeria – BP & Statoil

  • Began operations in 2004
  • 1.2 Mt/yr of CO2 is captured from a gas processing plant and is injected in to a depleted gas reservoir 1800 metres below ground

Canada & USA – Cenovus, Apache & Dakota Gasification

  • Began operations in 2000
  • 2.2Mt/yr CO2 is captured in North Dakota and transported 330km to to Saskatchewan to be injected into mature oil reservoirs for enhanced oil recovery

Val Verde Natural Gas Plants

USA

  • Began operations in 1972 in Texas
  • 1.3 Mt/yr CO2 is captured from five natural gas processing facilities in the Sharon Ridge field and is piped 132km for enhanced oil recovery

  • 0.7 Mt/yr CO2 is captured from a fertilizer production facility and is piped 192km for enhanced oil recovery

  • Began operations in 1986 in Wyoming
  • 3.4 Mt/yr CO2 is captured from a a natural gas processing facility and is piped 190km for enhanced oil recovery in the Rangely Weber and Salt Creek oil field
